He Thought He'd Have to Move. Then a Robotic Lawn Mower Changed His Mind.

At Autonomous Motion, most Yarbo installs are about the yard: how big it is, where the dock goes, which areas need mowing. But a recent visit with one of our customers had us thinking about something a lot bigger than grass.

A customer who thought he'd have to move

This spring we installed a Yarbo lawn mower for a customer with a good-sized property. When we first talked, he mentioned that he figured he'd have to move. He loved his place, but he was no longer physically able to cut the grass himself.

That was hard for him. He had been a farmer for years, and being outside and independent was part of his DNA. He'd always looked after his own yard, and watching the grass grow week after week with no way to keep up left him frustrated and angry. It wasn't really about the lawn. It was about feeling like he was losing the ability to take care of his own home, and starting to believe the only answer was to leave it.

So we mapped his yard, set up the dock and got the mower going. Then we left it to do its job.

A summer of watching his robotic lawn mower work

It cut his grass all season. And here's the part we didn't see coming: he loved watching it. He'd see it head out on schedule, work its way across the lawn and park itself back on the dock. It became part of his day. And he wasn't the only one watching. People would stop to take pictures and videos of the robot at work, and before long he was the talk of the neighbourhood.

Back for the snow blower

This fall our team went back to see him, because he'd decided to add the snow blower for winter. During that visit, he told us he loved his lawn mower. He thought it was the greatest thing ever. Then he said the part that stuck with us: it had allowed him to stay in his place.

A lawn mower let him stay in his home. That's not something we expected to hear on a sales call.

We installed the snow blower, and now the same robot that mowed all summer will keep his driveway clear this winter.

What we realized

After that install, we realized we'd been thinking about our customers too narrowly. We sell Yarbo as a way to save time and skip the chores. For this customer, it was more than that. It was the difference between staying in the home he loves and leaving it.

It also gave him something to do and something to watch. He wasn't handing his yard over to a stranger on a plow route. He was still running the show, just without the hours on a mower seat or behind a shovel.

That's what aging in place gracefully looks like to us: keeping your home, your routine, and the feeling that your place is still yours to look after.

Part of a bigger conversation about accessible homes

Accessibility in housing is getting national attention. Canada's National Housing Council has a review panel looking into the lack of accessible housing in this country, and in his submission to that panel, Canada's Accessibility Commissioner, Christopher Sutton, called for accessibility to be built into federally supported housing from the start, rather than fixed later with costly retrofits.

Most of that conversation is about what happens inside the home: entrances, layouts and design. Our customer's story is a reminder that the yard and driveway matter too. If the snow can't get cleared or the grass can't get cut, even a home that works well inside can become hard to stay in.

Is this something for your family?

If you, or a parent, are starting to wonder how many more summers and winters of yard work are left, here's how it works with a Yarbo:

  • One robot, swappable modules: a lawn mower for summer and a snow blower for winter, plus a leaf blower and trimmer.

  • It runs on a schedule you set, and the snow blower can start on its own as snow begins to fall.

  • When the battery runs low, it heads back to its dock to charge, then finishes the job.

  • You can watch it from the window, or check on it in the app.

  • We and our local dealers handle the mapping, installation, seasonal module swaps and service, so you're never on your own with it.

And yes, you still get to watch it work. Our customer would tell you that's half the fun.

Local support, close to home

We're growing our network of local Yarbo dealers across Canada, so more homeowners have someone nearby for setup, seasonal module swaps and service. For families planning for a parent to stay in their home, having that support close by makes a real difference.

Come talk to us

If this story sounds like someone you know, give us a call or contact us. We'll come walk the property, talk through what you need, and help you decide if a Yarbo is the right fit.
